Frequently Asked Questions

How is this award going to change anything in the community?

The STARK COLOR PICTURE PRIZE has the potential to change stereotyping, racism, unconscious bias, lack of awareness, and stigma in three specific ways.  The first mechanism for change is the relationship between the film's subject and the film's makers.  When you work hard to tell someone's story -- you learn about yourself in the process of learning about them.  You re-consider the world from another person's perspective and you become more committed t to the value and worth of telling stories and understanding people in a deeper way.

The second mechanism for change is that these stories will be screened for audiences at the Canton Film Festival and here on reelate.org; the change that an audience experiences by watching one small story is microcosmic, sometimes even imperceptible.  But engaging a story is the first step toward developing a more hospitable imagination and a more empathic outlook.

The third mechanism for change is that these stories become a part of an archive -- they will be archived by the Stark County District Library and here on reelate.org.  Archives are powerful resources in a community.  Stories that last, that are preserved can be used by teachers, students, researchers, leaders, and historians.  The stories that we keep often define who we become.

Can I donate anonymously?

While kickstarter doesn't have an "anonymous" donation function -- you can just make your username something that no one would ever guess and then donate with relative anonymity.  We would like to suggest that you combine your favorite nostalgic pop stars name with a pizza place in Stark County.  And then donate $100 (relatively) anonymous dollars.

What if you don't raise all $1800 during your kickstarter campaign?

If we don't raise enough money to fund the prize -- it won't happen.  While we could have approached corporate sponsors or a few funders?  We chose to create a kickstarter because we believe that building broad support for this prize is a way to demonstrate a widespread commitment to change, equality and the value of diversity in our community.

Why are you raising money now for a prize that won't be awarded until 2017?

Making a film takes a long time.  Making a great documentary film about a person's experience takes an even longer time.  We want to announce this prize NOW so we can motivate filmmakers to start their projects NOW.   But we can't officially award the prize until you fund it.
